AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley School Board expressed its appreciation Monday to the communities and staff members who worked to bring grants and donations to the schools.
The board accepted six grants and donations during its meeting Monday.
Special Education teacher Cathy Olson and Tippecanoe Valley Middle School guidance counselor April Stiles collaborated to apply for a grant from Donor’s Choose. They received a grant for $234 to be used for a purchase of materials to use with students to make them feel at ease. The packet of materials all encompass the topic “Help! I Can’t Express Myself.”
Retired teacher Ann Chubb presented a check for $500 to Olson on behalf of the Retired Teachers Association. The donation will be used for the purchase of work station boxes for the functional skills classroom.
The Atwood Lions Club donated $500 to the Boomerang Backpack program. The program supplies food for weekends for food insecure students and their families. The program coordinator is Emma Coppes.
Superintendent Blaine Conley said, “This was an unsolicited donation and TVSC appreciates the thoughtfulness of the Atwood Lion Club members.”
The food program supports 115 students corporationwide.
The Lakes Area Autism Network donated $200 to be used for horseback riding at Magical Meadows. Magical Meadows provides therapeutic horseback riding for individuals on the Autism Spectrum and those with physical, emotional and cognitive disabilities.
A second food program called Viking Vittles run by TVMS sixth-grade teacher Nikki Early also provides food items for students by sending food packages each Friday. The Beaver Dam Church donated $1,000 to support the efforts.
During a week-long Vacation Bible School held at the Beaver Dam United Methodist Church, children were encouraged to give tithes. The church’s education chair, Shelly Engle, and the VBS co-chair, Cami Shriver, recognized a program at TVHS called Champions Together as a program that is having an impact on students. A check in the amount of $1,000 was presented to TVHS Principal Chad Cripe
In other matters, the board unanimously approved the school calendar for the 2019-20 school year. The first student day will be Aug. 9. Conley said starting on a Friday had worked well for students and teachers in the past.
Graduation is set for June 7, 2020. A total of 12 emergency make-up days have been built into the calendar as well.
