NORTH WEBSTER - Avis Miller, town council-appointed member of the Tippecanoe Township - North Webster Library Board, appeared at the town council meeting Wednesday asking for $15,000, half of the library's 2001 operating expenses.
Council members Kay Andrews, Ken Wagoner and Jeff Morgan approved the annual request with Wagoner saying next year the library should ask for more funding.
The library funding is unique in that the township and town split costs of the operation because there are not enough residents in town to place the library on the tax rolls.
More than 25,000 items were checked out of the library last year, Miller said. The library has four computers: one for check-out records and three for public use.
The library board representative said private donations to the library are very generous, however, they are often earmarked for certain projects.
The board discussed the area around the Goodwill collection box where people dump bags full of clothing and other items outside the box.
Often there is room inside, according to town superintendent Marshall Minnick and town marshal Jerry Craig, who have both observed people dumping unacceptable items around the box. It was also noted items left outside the container may be in good shape when left, but when they sit through a couple days of rain, they are ruined.
It was noted the street barricades set out by the North Webster Lions Club during the June 24 55th Annual Mermaid Festival parade have not been collected.
In other business:
Minnick discussed several street repaving projects. He was advised to get quotes for the work.
The board set several additional meeting times including: Friday at 1 p.m. with the Wawasee School Corp. administrative personnel at the new elementary school site to discuss traffic patterns; a regular meeting Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. beginning with a public hearing regarding a Department of Commerce feasibility planning grant; a budget hearing Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. with adoption of the budget Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.
The board adjourned around 7:45 p.m. and opened an executive session to discuss contract negotiations.
