NORTH MANCHESTER - What Tippecanoe Valley's boys and girls track teams had in common Thursday night in a Three Rivers Conference meet with Manchester was that they both won. Where they differed was how they went about winning.
The boys team, which defeated the Squires 80-52 to up its record to 2-1 and 1-0 in the TRC, took first place in 11 of the evening's 16 events, with seven of the wins coming from three people. The Viking girls team topped Manchester 67-56, improving to 3-0 and 1-0, with a solid team performance.
"Our girls team is a little different," Valley coach Terry Screeton said. "We don't have one real outstanding performer."
The boys meet had three of them - Noah Silveus, Eric Carlin and David Tilden.
Carlin took first place in both hurdles races and the 200. Carlin's time of 15.69 seconds in the 110 hurdles was nearly two seconds ahead of second-place finisher Annon Gaerte of Manchester.
"He ran real well because of the fact he had tough competition with Annon Gaerte," Screeton said. "He needed to so the team could win."
Silveus took top honors in the 400 with a time of 54.5 seconds. Manchester's Nate Kerr took second with a time of 55.38.
In the high jump, Manchester's John MacFarlane took second place with a leap of 5-foot-6. Silveus didn't make his first attempt until the bar was at 5-8. He cruised to the win with a jump of 6-2. He attempted 6-3 three times but was unsuccessful.
"Both of them were real solid," Screeton said of Carlin and Silveus. "I'm especially happy with Noah in the 400. It was his first 400 all year due to the long basketball season. He was hurt a little but he ran an excellent time."
Tilden notched first-place finishes in the 100 with a time of 12 seconds flat and in the long jump with a distance of 19-8 1/2.
Valley also got first-place finishes from Evan Boggs in the 800 (2:18.35), Chris Leiter in the 1600 (5:17) and from the 400 (:47.65) and 3,200 (9:42) relay teams.
"The whole distance crew on the boys side dominated," Screeton said. "This is a good win for us. We always like to beat the TRC schools, it sets the tone a little bit. We're still a ways from where we need to be as far as the TRC goes, but it's nice to see the little things come together."
The Vikings won the TRC title a year ago for the first time since 1979.
Manchester got first-place finishes from Jarred Kopkey (discus, 119-2), David Bazzoni (pole vault, 14-0), Nick Winters (shot put, 46-4), Thomas Penrod (3200, 12:03) and the 1,600 relay team (3:45.5).
On the girls side of things, the Vikings notched the 11-point win by taking first in eight of the meet's 15 events. Not one Valley girl had more than one first.
"Sarah Kindig in the 400 and also in the long jump had a good performance," Screeton said. "In the long jump she went over 15 feet, that's a real good night."
Kindig, a junior, took top honors in the 400 with a time of 1:06.38 and second in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet even.
Manchester sophomore Ann Harms took first in the long jump with a 15-1. She also won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.8 seconds.
"The kids did an outstanding job," Manchester girls coach Keith Metzger said. "Tippecanoe Valley has a good girls team. We have a bunch of young girls who aren't sure what to do. We had good performances in the shot put. Monica Minnix and Ashley Penrod got second and third. Against Wawasee they didn't place. There were a lot of positives for a young team."
Minnix was second in the shot put with a toss of 27-3 1/2, while Penrod was third with a distance of 26-10 1/2. Valley's Jessica Fox won the shot put event with a 29-8.
Other first-place finishers for Manchester were Lydia Flora (1600, 6:00 and 3200, 13:02), Kambs (800, 2:46.47), Tina French (200, :28.28) and the 3200 relay team (11:02).
Other first-place finishers for the Vikings include Tara Pratt (high jump, 4-8), Holly Green (100, :13.53), Jill Stutzman (discus, 8-2.5), 400 relay team (:58.16) and the 1600 relay team (4:37.37).
Valley's boys team will be in action Saturday at the North Side Invitational in Fort Wayne at 9:30 a.m. The girls team will be involved in the Northridge invitational at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Manchester's boys team will participate in the Churubusco Relays Saturday at 10 a.m. The Squire girls (0-2, 0-1) team will be in action again Monday when the boys and girls team hosts TRC rival North Miami.
