AKRON – Tippecanoe Valley School Board recognized some retirees Monday.
Niki Early, social studies teacher at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School, has 29-1/2 years at Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation teaching. She taught at Akron Elementary, then Mentone Elementary and then the middle school. TVSC Superintendent Blaine Conley said she started the Viking Vittles program.
“She wrote grants and put that program into our middle school,” he said.
Karla Hayden, reading interventionist at Mentone Elementary, said when she was applying for work at schools, she only applied to TVSC. She was thrilled when she got a job at Mentone Elementary because she lived a short distance away, Conley read from information Hayden provided. In that information, Hayden said she always tried to make learning activities engaging.
Julie Kreuger, head cook at Akron Elementary, has been with TVSC for 15 years with two years at Akron Head Start.
Lisa Adams, teacher and director at Beaver Dam Preschool, was also recognized Monday. Conley said TVSC has always rented out a room for the preschool at Akron Elementary. Conley said Adams has 24 years at the preschool.
Linda Studebaker, from Beaver Dam Church, said everything Adams plans meets some need a 3- or 4-year-old child has, whether mental, emotional or social.
In other business, the board heard:
• The Akron Elementary School Student Council organized the annual Riley’s Children’s Hospital fundraiser and raised over $10,000. Principal Scott Sterk said if $10,000 was raised, it was agreed Sterk was among the people who would sleep on the school roof.
• Third-graders Ellison Burton and Dax Miller and second-grader Elijah Martin earned perfect scores on the iRead test.
• The Akron Elementary Spell Bowl team placed 12th in the state. During the Academic Spell Bowl in November, fourth-grader Ethan Miller spelled all of his words correctly.
• The Akron Math Bowl teams were broken into two groups: fourth-grade and fifth-grade teams. The teams competed against 110 other schools and both teams placed second in their division in the Math Bowl on April 11 in Wabash.
• The 3D Printing Club was a new club this year. Pike Lumber donated three 3D printers for the club.
