BURKET – The Tippecanoe Valley School Board elected new officers during its regular meeting Monday.

Adam Heckaman will serve as president with Aaron Zolman as vice president and Stan Miller, secretary.

Jessica McFarland was once again appointed treasurer.

The dates, times and places of the monthly meetings will be the same as the 2017 schedule.

The meeting was held at the Burket Educational Center. Students enrolled in the alternative education program were given an opportunity to share their achievements  by Micah Lukens, instructor in the program.

The board accepted a grant from the SmithStrong Foundation Fund of $1,000, awarded by the Kosciusko County Community Foundation. Grant funds will be used to award an outstanding student athlete at Tippecanoe Valley High School who most closely exemplifies the values that Charlie and Scott Smith demonstrated in their daily lives.

Four TVHS juniors were recognized as recent recipients of the Rising Stars of Indiana Award. Shayleigh Shriver, Elijah Holder, Dylan Wood and Olivia Ellenwood all received the non-competitive recognition for the Rising Star program designed to honor high school juniors for their academic achievements

The Indiana Association of School Principals  hopes to increase their visibility and scholarship opportunities by allowing schools to identify outstanding scholars.

The board also recognized four TVHS teachers.

Erin Eastgate and Kristen Ekhoff received the STEM Teach III Grant, which allows them to pursue their Master’s Degree in their content area. They will remain dual credit certified. STEM refers to studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Indiana.

Noemi Ponca and June Yazel have been accepted into the Indiana ACP program in U.S. History and Spanish. Their acceptance will allow TVHS students to earn six dual credits in U.S. history and up to 12 dual credits in Spanish.

Dual credits mean that students receive both high school and college credits for successfully passing course work from certified teachers.
