Tigers Top NLC Rivals

SYRACUSE – Warsaw boys track and field coach Matt Thacker knows his team isn’t perfect.
The 12th-ranked Tigers, however, are pretty good.
That was evident again Thursday evening, as they scored a pair of Northern Lakes Conference wins by beating both the NorthWood Panthers and host Wawasee Warriors 90-42.
Wawasee beat NorthWood 77-55.
“We’re not perfect, but we have guys that can score points all over the place,” said Thacker, whose team improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in NLC action.
“Depth has been real key for us,” he added. “We’re blessed to have so many kids that want to be a part of this. In track, you’ve got to run far, run fast, work hard – and we’re blessed to have kids that want to put in the time to get better. We’ve got a good thing going on.”
In Thursday evening’s triangular meet, the Tigers won 11 of the 16 events.
They finished second in five events.
One good example of Warsaw’s talent and depth was its performance in the 1,600-meter run.
Ellis Coon won the 1-mile race in a time of 4:41.60, while teammates Ismael Calderon (4:42.72) and Daniel Messenger (4:58.62) were second and fourth, respectively.
Wawasee’s Adam Doll, who led a good portion of the race, crossed the line third in a time of 4:43.62.
“That’s a credit to Coach (Rob) Peters, he does a great job with the distance guys,” said Thacker. “And it’s a credit to Coach (Jim) Mills and the cross country program.”
Warsaw also finished dominated the 3,200-meter run, as Jacob Poyner won in a time of 9:34.35, finishing 47 seconds ahead of Doll.
Calderon (10:43.69) and Warsaw teammate Brysten James (10:47.32) were third and fourth, respectively.
Wyatt Jones won three individual events for the Tigers, claiming victories in the 100 (11.10 sec), 200 (23.93) and 400 (50.78).
Jones also teammed up with Nathan Kolbe, Gabe Furnivall and Tristan McClone to win the 400 relay in a time of 44.27 seconds.
The Tigers were victorius in the other two relays as well, with Furnivall, Spencer Rheinhardt, Ryan Goon and Chad Goon winning the 1,600 relay in 3:34.41.
In the 3,200 relay, Messenger teammed up with Robert Murphy, Nick Adams and Michael Compton to score a victory in 8:38.96.
Other winners for the Tigers included Zach Rooney in the long jump (20-9), Ryan Goon in the 300 hurdles (41.38) and Rheinhardt in the 800 (2:02.08).
The Warriors took first in three events.
Clayton Cook won the 110 hurdles in 16.14 seconds, while Jake Schwartz won both the discus (147-8.5) and shot put (47-11).
NorthWood’s only victory came in the high jump competition, where Will Stueve won with a height of 6-3. His teammate, Devon Hunsberger finished second at 6-2.
Warsaw, Wawasee and NorthWood will all be in action again Saturday at the Goshen Relays.
