Tigers Tame NLC Netters

NAPPANEE - Warsaw dominated the NLC tennis scene this year, placing first in the regular season and then dominating at the NLC Tournament on Saturday. The domination paid off in the all-conference selections as well.

Warsaw's Craig Harman placed first at No. 1 singles, defeating Eric Bowers from NorthWood in the championship 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). Wawasee's Ryan Perzanowski ended fourth overall.

At No. 2 singles, Warsaw's Ryan VanPuffelen defeated Plymouth's Jeff Gariotte 6-3, 6-3. NorthWood's Peter Metz finished third overall, while Wawasee's Steve Ummel placed sixth.

At No. 3 singles, Warsaw's Peter Anders defeated Chris Manhart in the championship 6-2, 6-2. Blaine Beehler of NorthWood took third overall and Andy Cole from Wawasee took seventh.

At No. 1 doubles, Owen Compton and Dan Benyousky for Warsaw defeated Jeremiah Lauber and Kevin Huffman from Plymouth 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the championship. Quyan Tran and Jared Manhensmith took fourth for Wawasee and James Allen and Chet Walters took seventh for NorthWood.

At No. 2 doubles, Wawasee's Farhan Haq and Shane Beer defeated Eric Grossnickle and Matt Krizmanich from Warsaw in the championship 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Shawn Hoover and Bobby Brown of NorthWood took sixth.

After Warsaw, Plymouth and Wawasee tied for third in the NLC. NorthWood placed fifth.

In the all-conference selections, Harman, VanPuffelen, Anders, Benyousky and Compton were all named for the Tigers. Haq and Beer were the only other all-conference selections for Wawasee. NorthWood's Bowers was named at large all-conference, as was Wawasee's Perzanowski.

Andy Lewis was named coach of the year in the NLC for Warsaw.

"This was one of the biggest victories for Warsaw in a long time," Lewis said. "It's the first time (under Lewis) that we've won the NLC outright. After Craig (Harman) defeated Scharf to start Saturday morning, it pretty much clinched it for Warsaw. Then it came down to pride. We played up to our potential on Saturday."

Warsaw (10-1, 6-0) will host Penn on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Wawasee will be at Manchester on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. NorthWood will host Culver Military at 4:45 p.m. today.

• Volleyball

Wawasee At Homestead Invitational

At Fort Wayne, Wawasee went 1-2 on Saturday defeating East Noble 15-11, 15-7.

Wawasee lost to Homestead 15-6, 15-0 and Concord 15-8, 16-14.

Kara Mathew had 18 kills, 15 digs and six blocks in the win. Darcy Replogle added 16 kills and Sarah Frantz had 43 assists and seven aces for the Warriors.

Wawasee (14-13) will host Whitko on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Warsaw Invitational

Warsaw placed third out of eight teams at its own tournament on Saturday. The Tigers defeated Broad Ripple 15-2, 15-2 and South Bend Washington 15-9, 15-3. Warsaw then lost to Lafayette Jefferson 7-15, 15-9, 15-5 before coming back to defeat Kokomo 15-13, 15-9.

Nancy Mason had 20 kills, 16 digs, 10 aces and seven blocks on the day. Alyssa Raphael added 17 kills, nine digs, two aces and six blocks for the Tigers. Shanna Smith had 12 kills, 21 digs and three aces and Liz Owens had 15 kills, 15 digs and four aces. Karla Bailey had 52 assists and nine aces while Jessica Zaug had 16 assists and two aces.

Warsaw (11-12, 3-1) will host West Noble tonight at senior night at 6 p.m.

JV: Warsaw At Penn Invitational

At Mishawaka, Warsaw went 2-2 on Saturday defeating South Bend Clay and John Adams while losing to Penn and Marquette.

In the two wins, Ryann Jones had 15 aces for Warsaw. Nerecia Taylor had nine kills and 12 blocks in the two losses. Janelle Kessler had 41 assists on the day.

Warsaw (12-7, 3-1) will host West Noble today.

Frosh: Warsaw At Michigan City Invitational

At Michigan City, Warsaw lost twice on Saturday falling to Valparaiso and Lake Central.

In the 3-15, 15-6, 15-11 loss to Valparaiso, Jacquie Burns had 15 assists and six aces. Natalie Jones and Linday Woods had three kills each.

In the 17-15, 15-6 loss to Lake Central, Kristin DeGeeter had three kills and Burns added six assists.

Trinity Over LCA 15-13, 15-4

Kelly Custer had three kills and Janelle Sou had seven hits, but LCA fell on Saturday.

Heather Jones added 20 sets in the loss to Trinity.

In junior varsity action, LCA loss to Trinity 15-10, 15-11. Joy Houghten had seven points for the Cougars.

Lakeland will host Lakewood Park on Tuesday.

Triton At South Bend LaSalle Tournament

At South Bend, Triton went 3-1 on Saturday to place third overall.

Triton defeated New Prairie 15-10, 15-10, South Bend Adams 15-13, 15-3 and LaVille 15-1, 15-6. The Trojans only loss was to Michigan City Marquette 15-4, 12-15, 15-10.

Jena Weissert had 27 kills on the dayy and Heather Barron added 33 assists. Megan Sarber had eight assists and 22 kills.

Triton (20-4) will host Bremen on Tuesday.

Wawasee 5, East Noble 0

At Kendallville, John Szynal scored on a corner kick from Niko Ioannon just 1:40 into the game and Wawasee cruised from there for an easy win on Saturday.

Ioannon had two assists and a goal and Szynal had two goals. Shawn McMahan and Jay Haugh each had one goal. Wawasee outshot East Noble 26-4.

The junior varsity team won 3-0 after being tied at 0-0 at the half. Andy Miner scored two goals and Brad Corbi scored one for the Warriors. Tom Leary picked up the shutout.

Wawasee (3-7-1) will be at Northridge on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. The junior varsity team (5-3-2) will host Northridge at 4:45 p.m.

Argos 3, Warsaw 1

At Argos, Warsaw's five-game winning streak was snapped on Saturday in a loss to Argos.

Warsaw scored first on a direct penalty kick by Phil Hood just 17:40 into the first half. That lead would hold up in the first half.

However, in the second half, Argos scored three times in the first 17 minutes for the win.

In junior varsity action, goalie Rudy Ramirez led Warsaw to a 1-0 victory over Argos. It was Warsaw's sixth shutout of the year. Brian Watson scored the lone goal 16 minutes into the second half as the team improved to 8-4 on the season.

Warsaw (5-6-1, 3-1) will travel to Mishawaka Marion on Tuesday and Northridge Thursday. The Tigers will then celebrate senior night at Fisher Field on Saturday against Plymouth at 7 p.m.

LCA 2, FW Christian 2

Justin Hartman scored his first goal of the season and Jordan Kasper added another as Lakeland tied Fort Wayne Christian on Friday.

The junior varsity team lost 3-1. John Franklin scored the only goal for the Cougars.

Lakeland (1-6-1) will meet Elkhart Baptist tonight at 4:30 p.m.

• Cross Country

Wawasee At Culver Invitational

At Culver, Wawasee placed seventh out of 20 teams in the big school division and the Warriors defeated No. 20 Warren Central on Saturday in boys action. Dusty Lytle ran a time of 17:00 to lead the Warriors, 7-2 on the season.

The girls team placed 15th overall as Katie McCauley ran a 16:11 for the Warriors. It was Wawasee's fastest team time of the year.

The boys and girls will both be at Warsaw on Tuesday at 5 p.m. On the boys side, the event will be for sole possession of second place in the conference.

Whitko At Snider Classic Invitational

At Fort Wayne, Whitko's boys finished tenth overall with 234 points and the girls placed 15th overall with 425 points on Saturday.

Mike McKeighen placed 32nd overall for the boys with a time of 18:15. Brooke Southworth took 61st for the girls with a time of 18:29. Natalie Ridenour and Rita Wilkinson both set personal bests.

Whitko will be at Northfield with Wabash and Manchester on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Triton At Wabash Invitational

At Wabash, The boys finished eighth out of 18 teams and the girls ended eighth out of 17 teams on Saturday.

Mason McIntyre placed third overall with a time of 17:19. Reghan Kreft finished seventh among the girls with a time of 16:15.

On Friday, both the boys and the girls defeated LaVille. The boys won 17-38 and the girls won 19-44. Mason McIntyre placed first with a time of 17:40. Shelly Miller took first overall with a time of 16:43.

Triton will compete at Bethany Christian in a 5-way meet today at 4:45 p.m.

At New Carlisle, Bill Hackworth scored two touchdowns and Brandon Clauss added a touchdown reception from Kenny Miller as Triton won on Saturday.

Clauss caught two passes for 38 yards to lead the Trojans.

Triton will host Caston on Monday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. in the final junior varsity game of the year.
