Tigers Rip Warriors 104-19

SYRACUSE - If the girls track and field teams from Warsaw and Wawasee were automobiles, Warsaw would be a Lamborghini and Wawasee a Chevette.

Thursday afternoon, the high-performance machine won out, as Warsaw cruised to a 104-19 win. Warsaw is 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference, while Wawasee falls to 3-3 and 0-3.

"I expected to be very strong tonight," Warsaw coach Paul Boyd said. "Our field events fared quite well."

Warsaw swept - took places one through three - in three field events, the shot put, discus and long jump.

Senior Heather Walenga won the throwing events for Warsaw, while Claire Beckett won the long jump. The Tigers took first and second in the high jump with Kim Kurosky and Erin Cook.

On the track, Warsaw was as dominant as it was in the field events. The Tigers swept the 1600, 800 and 3200.

In all, the Tigers won 12 of 15 events, and took 12 seconds and eight thirds.

"I knew they were a very good team," Wawasee coach Kevin Gilbert said of Warsaw. "It's difficult to compete with teams like that. We can't get swept in events like that. We had some girls get some personal bests, but we're not on the same level as a team with the caliber of Warsaw."

Senior Erica Auker took two of Wawasee's three first-place finishes. Auker won the 300 hurdles with a time of 50.7 seconds and the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.5 seconds. Freshman Britney Winchester won the 400 for the Warriors with a time of 1:01.6.

Kim Love (100), Jennifer Finch (1600, 3200), Beckett (long jump, 200), Walenga (shot, discus) and Kurosky (800, high jump) all took individual first-place finishes for the Tigers.

Warsaw's 1600 relay team of Jill Wehrly, Chelsea Boyd, Amy Robertson and Beckett won with a time of 4:17.5, as did the 400 relay team of Cook, Beckett, Robertson and Love in a time of 53.6 seconds. The Tigers swept the relay events by winning the 3200 relay in a time of 10:44 with the foursome of Wehrly, Boyd, Robertson and Rondeau.

Both Warsaw and Wawasee will compete in Saturday's Turtle Town Invite at Churubusco.
