ARGOS - While it took overtime to decide the winner in the first game of the boys soccer sectional at Argos High School Monday evening, it took just three minutes in the second contest.
Following an exciting sectional opener that saw Plymouth upend Marshall County rival Culver Military Academy 2-1 in overtime, Warsaw scored three minutes into its contest with Oregon-Davis and never looked back.
The Tigers, looking for their fourth consecutive sectional championship, began defense of last year's title with a dominating 5-0 win over Oregon-Davis.
"It's hard to keep your pattern of play together when you're up against a weaker side," said Warsaw coach Scott Bauer. "We wanted to emphasize playing with desire and passion."
The win improved the Tigers to 10-4-3 on the season and advanced them to Thursday's semifiinal round. Warsaw will play Plymouth Thursday at 5 p.m.
The Tigers beat the Rockies 1-0 a week ago in their regular season finale at the City-County Athletic Complex.
"I think it'll be a tight match," Bauer said of Thursday's match up with the Rockies. "I think they've got the athleticism and players to certainly beat us. But I feel good about our chances."
Action in the Argos Sectional resumes tonight at Eugene Snyder Field at 5 p.m. when LaVille squares off with Argos. Culver Community and Bremen will follow at approximately 7 p.m.
The winners of tonight's games will play Thursday at approximately 7 p.m.
The sectional championship is scheduled for Saturday evening.
In Monday's win over the Bobcats, the Tigers got on the board at the 3:00 minute mark when freshman Jessie Sharp's shot went through the legs of Oregon-Davis' goal keeper.
Senior Kyle Boyd assisted sophomore Michael Reinholt on Warsaw's second goal, which came 14 minutes after Sharp's goal.
Sharp scored his second goal of the game with just under eight minutes remaining in the half on an assist from Reinholt.
The Tigers led 3-0 at halftime, scoring as many goals in the first half as Oregon-Davis had wins during the season.
The Bobcats finished their season with a record of 3-10-2.
Warsaw took a 4-0 lead less than four minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal from senior Justin Schroeder.
Senior Evan Pickens scored the game's final goal on an assist from Boyd with just under 10 minutes remaining.
"I thought we looked good as a team," said Bauer. "It was hard not to look good. I would have liked us to defend a little better, though."
Warsaw finished the game with 19 shots on goal to Oregon-Davis' one. The Tigers had 13 corner kicks, while the Bobcats had none.
In the evening's first game, Plymouth took a 1-0 lead when Randy Davis scored on an assist from Sam Morris 7:13 into the contest.
