Tigers Light Up NorthWood In NLC Affair

Posted

NAPPANEE - For Warsaw girls soccer coach Brent Wildman, drubbing NorthWood 6-0 wasn't enough Thursday. That was expected against a program in just its second year. No, Wildman needed to see more out of his club than just putting a lot of goals on the scoreboard.

"We had to be careful that we don't let down, or we accomplish nothing," Wildman said. "The challenge to the girls tonight was to leave this game tonight a better team than we entered it."

Wildman admitted that his girls only executed the way he wanted them to about 50 percent of the time.

"But the girls did recognize what they did not execute," Wildman said. "That's the important thing."

Warsaw scored less than seven minutes into the match when Kari Wildman scored the first of her two goals on a cross from Frankie Vanderpool.

The Tigers would add to that with 26 minutes left in the first half on a goal from Lindsay Bruick to put Warsaw ahead 2-0.

It looked as if Warsaw would go into the half with that lead, but the NorthWood defense broke down late, and Hope Hart and Jodi Wildman each scored with less than three minutes to go before the break to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.

Warsaw put in two more goals in the second half as Rachel Buhrt scored, and Kari Wildman dropped in the final goal.

"We got half of our goals from the outside, and we got a couple of goals right up the middle and that's exactly what we worked on," Wildman said. "We had scoring from five different positions on our six goals."

Jenna Rooney and Liz Wiggins combined on the shutout in goal. Rooney played the first half, and Wiggins held onto the shutout after being peppered late in the game when the Tigers subs had all come on.

Vanderpool, Chelsea Boyd, Buhrt and Kari Wildman were all credited with assists for the Tigers. Boyd and Kari Wildman are two of the Tigers four freshman starters.

"Most of these girls are experience, but yet we're starting four freshmen," Wildman said. "That's the challenge of it. We're very young but very smart."

Warsaw (2-0-1) will be at Plymouth Saturday at 10 a.m.
