In the opening round of the Northern Lakes Conference tennis tournament Wednesday in Warsaw, the host Tigers won on each court, while Wawasee failed to advance anyone to today’s semifinals. For Warsaw, which finished 5-2 in the NLC regular season, Sam Rice was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Northridge’s Landon Arnold at No. 1 singles and will face Goshen’s Hudson Kay today, back at Warsaw. Also for the Tigers, top-seeded Nic Jansen won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles against Northridge’s Ted Field, and Caleb Ray was a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) victor against Wawasee’s Cal Heinisch at No. 3 singles. Jansen moves on to face NorthWood’s Ryan Menzie in today’s semifinals and Ray will take on top-seeded Nate Knapp of Plymouth. In doubles action, Warsaw’s Christopher Herendeen and Cole Baker defeated Wawasee’s Jake Hutchinson and Nate Haines 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 1 court. Today, Herendeen and Baker square off against Plymouth’s top-seeded duo of Ryan Johnson and Max Holloway. The Tigers’ No. 2 doubles team also got a win over Wawasee, as Justin Stout and David Homme got a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Brayton Fretz and Leonard Kline. Again, Warsaw will face a top seed in the semifinals, as Stout and Homme will take on Goshen’s Peter Vukovich and Zach Ganger.
