Tigers Dominate Goshen RedHawksThe Goshen RedHawks scored the first and last touchdowns of Friday night’s high school football game at Fisher Field. In between was a dominant performance by the host Warsaw Tigers, who extended their win streak to three games with a 43-14 homecoming victory. Trailing 7-0, the Tigers tied the game with 3:44 left in the first quarter when senior quarterback Michael Jensen hooked up with senior tight end Jeremy David for an 82-yard throw and catch. It was the first of four touchdown passes for Jensen – the other three went to senior wideout D’Andre Street – and the beginning of a Warsaw offensive onslaught that produced 43 unanswered points. “Goshen came out and took it right down the field, took it right at us, put points on the board to keep us from doing anything early, but we’ve got a lot of weapons and our kids are getting better at seeing what they’re taking away,” said Warsaw coach Phil Jensen, who notched the 125th win of his coaching career and his 96th with the Tigers. “If they’re going to take this away, then we’re going to go to this, and then we’ve got playmakers making plays. Jeremy David, D’Andre Street ... we had guys making plays all over the place. The offensive line did a great job in pass protection tonight. We did not do a very good job running early, but their pass protection was exceptional, which allowed Michael to find his receivers.” Michael Jensen completed 14 of 22 pass attempts for 341 yards. The only blemish in the younger Jensen’s performance was an interception, just his third of the season. David finished the game with four catches for 165 yards, while Street had four receptions for 67 yards and the three scores. “Once we start getting momentum, it’s on from there,” said Street, who had touchdown catches of 12, 6 and 10 yards. It certainly was on from there. The Tigers scored 36 of their 43 points in the middle two quarters, putting 23 on the board in the second stanza and 13 in the third. In the second quarter, Warsaw scored in all three phases of the game, and it took less than three and a half minutes to do so. A 12-yard pass from Michael Jensen to Street gave Warsaw a 14-7 lead with 7:29 remaining in the first half. With 4:22 on the clock, the Tiger defense tackled Goshen running back Jeff Stoll in the endzone for a safety. Warsaw’s Zach Riley then ran the ensuing free kick 75 yards to paydirt, giving the Tigers a 23-7 lead with 4:10 remaining in the half. The Tigers pushed their advantage to 43-7 with two more passes to Street and 40-yard interception return by junior Jack Tucker. “With our kicking game, if our defense is creating turnovers, we can put points on the board pretty quick,” said Phil Jensen. “It’s exciting to see all phases of the game working.” Through six games, no team has been able to return a kick against the Tigers. Warsaw kicker Andrew Mevis has booted the ball into the endzone for a touchback on every kickoff this season, which keeps the opposing offense from starting with great field position. Against Goshen, the Tiger defense came up with four turnovers – three interceptions and a fumble. With Friday’s win, Warsaw kept itself in the thick of the Northern Lakes Conference race. Class 4A No. 2 NorthWood, a 14-0 winner over Northridge, is 4-0 in the league standings, while Plymouth and Warsaw are 3-1, Concord and Goshen are 2-2, Wawasee and Northridge are 1-3 and Elkhart Memorial is 0-4. Both Warsaw and Goshen are 4-2 overall. Goshen senior Charlie Collins, starting in place of the injured CJ Detweiler, completed 10 of 18 passes for 98 yards. He didn’t throw a TD and was picked off twice. Detweiler played sparingly in the second half and completed 3 of 7 attempts. He was intercepted once. The bulk of the RedHawks’ offense came from Stoll, who carried the ball 23 times for 104 yards. Goshen’s two scores came on a 5-yard run by Dylan Back and a 13-yard run by Collins. The Tigers are in action again Friday, travelling to Syracuse to play Wawasee for the W Trophy. Goshen hosts Northridge in Week 7.
