AKRON - "The conditions weren't ideal for tennis."
Warsaw coach Rick Orban summed up Monday night's weather with that statement. Gusting winds and chilly temperatures presented a challenge for both teams as Warsaw faced off against Tippecanoe Valley.
The Tigers improved to 6-0 on the season with a 5-0 win over the Vikings.
"I think the wind helped us tonight," said Valley coach Matt Craig. "Both teams struggled with it. We needed more than the wind to help us today."
At the No. 1 singles position, Tiger senior Jessica Davis blanked Tippecanoe Valley's Brooke Prater in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
The rest of Warsaw's singles team was different from normal. Regular No. 2 singles player Kaitlyn Macdonald sat out Monday night's match with an injury, so Orban shuffled his lineup to fill her spot.
Jessica Sadler, who normally plays No. 3 singles for Warsaw, moved to the No. 2 singles position. Sadler defeated Allison Rock 6-0, 6-1.
"I was extremely proud of Jessica," said Orban. "This is her first year playing at the varsity level, and she has been playing the No. 3 singles spot. She came out tonight and played in the No. 2 singles position very well."
Moving to the varsity No. 3 singles position from one of the JV No. 1 doubles spots was Tiger Alicia Swenk. Swenk faced Valley's Krista Andrews and picked up a win for the Tigers, 6-0, 6-2.
"Alicia came out and did a wonderful job," said Orban. "It was her first varsity match, and she played very well."
In the closest match of the evening, Warsaw No. 1 doubles pair Kristi Haddad and Ashley Harrison took on Valley's Carli Anglin and Karissa Fields. Haddad and Harrison cam out on top 6-3, 6-2.
"I thought our doubles team made a decent match of it," said Craig. "Our No. 1 doubles is both seniors, and they are the only ones on the team with varsity experience."
Warsaw's No. 2 doubles team of Brandy Allen and Jillian Harrison finished the shutout with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vikings Maribeth Martin and Andrea Kindig.
The win moves Warsaw's record to 6-0 overall, while Valley falls to 1-4. The Tigers host Wawasee Thursday evening. Valley hits the road tonight for a match against LaVille.
