CULVER - Warsaw's varsity wrestlers traveled to Culver Military Academy Saturday for a "super dual" involving five teams.Ê
The Tigers finished the day with two wins and two losses.Ê Four Warsaw individuals went undefeated for the day: Matt Zellers (152 pounds), Steve Fribley (189), Steve McKinley (215) and Joey Navarro (275).
Coach Tony Boley said the team worked hard with good attendance in practices during the recent school closings, so he was disappointed about the two team losses, noting that in each case the Tigers missed victory by only one individual match.Ê The Warsaw team scores were as follows: Lake Central 36, Warsaw 33; Fremont 42, Warsaw 40; Warsaw 54, Culver Military 25; Warsaw 46, Logansport 25.Ê
The Tiger dual record for the season now stands at 10-2.
Warsaw's first match of the day was against Lake Central, where the Tigers found themselves losing their first eight matches. Then up stepped Zellers, who decimated his opponent with a 12-5 score before pinning him at 3:31.Ê After the win by Zellers, Warsaw went on to win the rest of its matches against Lake Central, Continued from Page 1B
but still came out on the losing side by only three points.Ê Lake Central had a point deducted from their team score for unsportsmanlike conduct leaving the final score at 36-33.
The Tigers were a bit short-handed after Adam Bott was injured in his first match and unable to participate the remainder of the day. Boley also reported that a varsity wrestler was recently removed from the team for disciplinary problems and that senior Joe Wildman has been out of competition due to an injury, although he is expected to be back for the next meet.
ÊBoley sees great potential in the junior varsity wrestlers who filled these holes even though the replacements went the day without finding wins. These young wrestlers have come a long way. One example is Richard Wolfe, who had no wins last season, but so far this season has tallied 17 wins.Ê
"The young guys need to learn how to protect a lead," said Boley, referring to the fact that in several matches the young Tigers were ahead in points but were then surprised and ended up getting pinned.
At 103 pounds for Warsaw, Anthony Boley notched a pin at 1:35 in one match but he also suffered two losses, finding himself pinned in the final minute both times.ÊÊ
Adam Harter (112) had a great day, winning two matches with pins and another with a "tech fall," that is, having a 15-point advantage over an opponent.Ê He lost one match on the day, a tough 3-0 decision to Ryan Alb of Lake Central, ranked third in the state.
Tim Roe (130) came up against eighth-ranked Paul Sacquitine of Fremont and was pinned in 3:49. However, in other matches, Roe added two more falls to his season total and continues to lead the team, now with 16.Ê
Joe Swanson (140) was pinned by Fremont's Brent Schlosser, another state-ranked wrestler. Swanson suffered another pin and a 7-3 loss along with his win by decision over Matt Gibson of Logansport.
At 145, Richard Wolfe was pinned by 10th-ranked Mike Ott of Logansport and also lost two other matches but came through with a pin of his Culver Military opponent.
Zellers (152) went undefeated for the day, winning two of his matches with pins and two with major decisions, scoring takedowns like Steve Siebenmorgen hits free throws. Zellers leads the team with a total of 117 takedowns after his 16 takedowns on Saturday.
Isaac Perry (160) lost only one match, and that was to state-ranked Scott Parrish of Fremont.ÊÊ Perry's victories came by way of pins (1:00 and 3:24).
Kris Hueber (171) pinned two of his opponents in the first period (1:59 and 59 seconds), and he won another match in an injury-delayed 5-2 decision.Ê
Hueber's only loss was a 7-17 decision to Beau Reichart of Culver Military.
Warsaw's outstanding wrestler on Saturday was Fribley, who pinned all four of his opponents. Three pins came without any score against Fribley. Kaleb Smith of Culver Military was behind 12-0 when Fribley took him to the mat at 2:44. The score was 4-0 against Matt Heath of Logansport when "Frib" stuck him at 3:08. Lake Central's Pavle Bjegovic was down 4-0 when he was pinned as the buzzer sounded to end the first period at exactly two minutes.
The toughest match for Fribley was against Joe Creager of Fremont, who lasted until the final minute of the final period.Ê In period one, Fribley opened up with a takedown for two points, but Creager reversed to gain control for his own two points.Ê Fribley battled back to regain control, and the score stood at 4-2 to end the period. To begin the second period, Fribley chose the down position and quickly escaped Creager's control. Then Fribley was taken down and put on his back but managed get out of the near fall. Now the Tiger found himself behind 7-5 going into the final period.Ê
At the whistle, Fribley was in the control position and never let up, putting Creager on his back for a two-point near-fall and then nailing him to the mat for good at 5:38. It was not enough though to give the team a win against Fremont. Fremont arrived at Culver with a 23-1 team record on the season, and even though the Tigers scored 29 team points in the final six matches, they were unable to catch up and lost by a 42-40 score.
McKinley also went undefeated, squeezing out a 6-3 decision against Jesse Peters of Logansport and dominating in three other matches with pins.Ê Joe McNaughton of Fremont fell at 56 seconds, and his Lake Central opponent crumpled at 21 seconds. In the first period against Joe Klinger of Culver Military, McKinley scored four takedowns and a two-point nearfall to take a 10-3 lead.Ê In the second period, McKinley started in the down position. He quickly reversed to gain control and put Klinger on his back in just 11 seconds for the pin (2:11).
Also winning all of his matches with pins was Navarro, who dispensed with all of his opponents in the first period, wrestling a total of 1:58.Ê Navarro crunched Matt Risher of Logansport (1:23) and finished off Tony Femminella of Lake Central in just 35 seconds.
