Tiger Track & Field Team Dominates Penn

Posted
Coach Matt Thacker calls the Penn Kingsmen “a good measuring stick.”
Thacker’s Warsaw boys track and field team certainly measured up Tuesday evening, as the Tigers hosted the Kingsmen and cruised to a 91-41 win.
The Tigers, who opened their outdoor season on March 22 with a 96-36 victory at East Noble, won 12 of 16 events against the Kingsmen.
“It’s always a good meet,” Thacker said of competing against the Kingsmen, whom the Tigers have had more than a few postseason battles with during Thacker’s tenure at Warsaw. “Penn’s always a good measuring stick for us, and vice versa. It’s always good competition for both of us, just trying to get a feel for where we’re at going into the all-out season after spring break.
“And the thing of it is, our kids compete, their kids compete, it’s good for both of us. It’s just one of those meets that we definitely want to get in before spring break. We love to run against them. Their coaches are great guys, they’re great people, and we wish them luck the rest of the way.”
Penn won just one running event Tuesday, the 200, with Dylan Hill’s time of 23.52 seconds just edging runner-up Brandon Reinholt of Warsaw’s time of 23.59.
The Kingsmen’s other three first-place finishes came in the discus, high jump and pole vault.
For Warsaw,  Ross Armey and Rane Kilburn were both a part of three wins.
Armey won both hurdles events and was a member of the winning 4x100 relay team.
Kilburn won the 100-meter dash, long jump and was also on the 4x100 relay team.
“Rane has been working pretty hard,” said Thacker. “You have to get after a little bit, you have to keep your thumb on him, but he has been working pretty hard. He’s starting to see the results of that on the track, and in the long jump, and in the 4x100. He just does a heck of a job with leadoff leg of the 4x100. It’s exciting to watch him.”
Owen Glogovsky was also double-winner in the individual events for Warsaw, claiming the 1,600 and 3,200.
“Owen’s just a great leader for us,” said Thacker. “He does a great job mentoring the younger kids. He’s great at coming out and doing what he does. The big thing is just keeping him healthy, and getting his times down. Hopefully things keep looking up for him, and we’ll have a great year out of him.”
Teaming up with Kilburn and Armey to win the 4x100 were Reinholt and Will McGarvey.
Xavi Ramirez, Taylor Mills, Will Robison and Trent Thompson won the 4x800 for the Tigers, while Bishop Harrison, Devin Street and brothers Leytan and Landan Perry won the 4x400 relay.
Other individual winners for the Tigers included Landan Perry (400), Ramirez (800) and Dylan Childers (shot put).
“I’m real pleased with the effort so far,” said Thacker. “This time of year, you really just don’t know. It’s kind of hard to equate indoor results with outdoor results. We’re just trying to get a feel for how to fill out a lineup. Right now, it’s really just go out and run, and the kids have really been working hard.”
Because of spring break, the Tigers don’t have another meet scheduled until April 14 when they host Northern Lakes Conference foes Concord and Wawasee.
