Tiger Swimmers Cruise Past Concord

Posted

Two days after a thrilling contest at rival Wawasee, there was little drama in Warsaw's boys and girls swim meet Thursday.

With wins over visiting Northern Lakes Conference foe Concord, Saturday morning will certainly see its share of drama as both the boys and girls host Northridge for the conference championship.

The Tiger girls improved to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the NLC with a convincing 111-75 win over the Minutemen, while the Warsaw boys upped their record to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in conference action with a 105-81 win.

"I thought the girls meet would be close," said Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman. "The girls swam unbelievable. We had a lot of lifetime bests. The boys also swam well. It was a really good meet overall."

With both the Northridge and Warsaw girls undefeated against NLC teams, Saturday's winner will take home the conference championship. If the Tiger boys team can upset the Raiders, who are unbeaten and ranked fifth in the state, they will tie for the NLC title. The Warsaw boys' only loss is to Wawasee, which has just one conference loss on its record as well, that coming in a meet with Northridge.

"The girls have a pretty good chance with it being at home," said Aukeman. "I'd give us the edge being at home. The boys will be a little more difficult. Northridge is No. 5 in the state and has a lot of top-notch swimmers. We're at home, so that does give us a shot."

Both the Warsaw boys and girls teams were right at home Thursday, as each team claimed first-place finishes in eight of the 12 events en route to convincing wins.

For the Warsaw boys, both Nate Taylor and Steve Lowrance took two individual first-place finishes.

Taylor won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:04.78 and the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:01.20.

Lowrance was first in the 50 freestyle (:22.55) and 100 freestyle (:48.53).

Other individual first-place finishes for the Tiger boys came from Nate Long in the 200 freestyle (1:49.41) and Thad Wallin in the 100 breaststroke (:57.48).

Kyle Marose teamed up with Wallin, Taylor and Lowrance to win the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:41.26, nine seconds ahead of the runner-up team from Concord, while the quartet of Kyle Marose, Ryan Marose, Nate Long and Taylor won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.73. That winning time was also nine seconds ahead of the runner-up foursome from Concord.

For the Warsaw girls, Alexia Hollar took first in the 50 freestyle (:25.58) and 100 backstroke (1:04.11), while Tara Stayer won diving (181.75), Jaylyn Haughee the 100 freestyle (:58.38) and Tracy Thallemer the 500 freestyle (5:42.43).

The Tiger girls also took first in the 200 medley relay (1:57.61), 200 freestyle relay (1:45.80) and 400 freestyle relay (4:00.56).

Saturday's meet with Northridge gets under way at 9:15 a.m. with the diving competition.
