Three local students will compete in the state level of the National Geography Bee Friday in Indianapolis.
Representing area students will be Donald Burkhart III, son of Donald II and Jeri Burkhart, Tippecanoe; Joel Anderson, son of Craig and Gail Anderson, Winona Lake; and Kendra Wilcox, daughter of Chuck and Kathy Wilcox, Winona Lake.
Burkhart is an eighth-grader at Triton Jr.-Sr. High School, Bourbon; Anderson is a sixth-grader from Eisenhower Elementary, Warsaw; and Wilcox is a seventh-grade homeschool student.
Preliminary rounds in Friday's bee begin at 12:40 p.m. in the Indiana University-Purdue University Lecture Hall Building, Indianapolis. The final round is set for 2:20 p.m.
The state bee is the second level of the National Geography Bee, which began in December with contests in nearly 20,000 schools across the country. The students advanced to the state bee after winning their school bees, then earning a top score on a written exam prepared by the National Geographic Society.
Each state winner will receive $100 and other prizes, including an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for the National Geography Bee May 27-28. Top prize in the national bee is a $25,000 scholarship.
