Thomas E. "Tom" Smith, 83, of Akron, passed unexpectedly Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018, at his granddaughter's residence near Akron.
He was born on April 6, 1935, in Floyd County, Ky., to Earl and Icie Adams Smith.
He married Virginia Ousley; she preceded in 1991. He was married in 1992 to Marlene Woodall; she survives.
In earlier years he worked for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. He owned a service station in Wabash, worked for Kerr McGee Service Station, and was an over-the-road truck driver for Penguin Point. He also worked for the Peabody Seating Co. of North Manchester.
Tom attended Gospel Hill Pentecostal Church of Silver Lake and Athens Community Church, as well as attending their men’s group.
He was a Chicago Cubs fans, loved woodworking, and enjoyed fishing, birdhouses and spending time at the coffee shops.
Survivors include his wife, Marlene Smith, Akron; daughters, Ruby (and husband Mike) Bowers, Athens, and Mary (and husband Michael) Dunnuck, Claypool; five stepchildren: Donna Smith, Silver Lake; Kim White, North Carolina; Teresa Click, South Carolina; Mitch Johnson, Laketon; and William Woodall, Warsaw; grandchildren: Chrissy (and husband Shannon) Mills, Ryan Bowers, Shawn (and wife Nicole) and Shanna (and husband Troy) Ricker; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; eight stepgrandchildren; several great-stepgrandchildren; a brother, Paul (and wife Carol) Smith, Claypool; and a sister, Opal (and husband Carmel) Manns, Akron.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Icie Smith; and a brother, Curtis Smith.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Hartzler Funeral Home. 305 W. Rochester St., Akron. The Rev. Frank Whitaker will officiate.
Burial will be in Akron Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at Hartzler Funeral Home.
