Thomas A. Smith, 70, of 3597 N. CR 800W, Warsaw, died at 1:51 p.m. Feb. 7, 2010, in his residence.
He was born April 2, 1939, in Warsaw, to Arthur E. and Lurabele Geist Smith. On June 10, 1961, he married Janet E. Romine, who survives.
A lifetime Kosciusko County resident, he farmed in the Warsaw, Mentone and Atwood areas, as well as working for the Clunette Elevator from 1966-88. He graduated from Atwood High School in 1957, then went on to serve in the U.S. Army from 1961-63. He attended Christ's Covenant Church, Warsaw. An avid 4-H supporter, he was also past president of the Kosciusko County Farm Bureau and past board member of REMC. In 1997, he was awarded the Conservation Farmer of the Year by the Kosciusko County Soil & Water District, and in 2001, was voted River Friendly Farmer of the Year in the state of Indiana.
Also surviving are a daughter, Alyssa (and spouse Ryan) Hernandez, Bourbon; three sons, Timothy (and spouse Denise) Smith and Todd (and spouse Amy) Smith, all of Warsaw, and Trent (and spouse Aleesha) Smith, Allen, Texas; 13 grandchildren: Hayley, Taylor, Abigail, Gavin, Rachel, Madisen, Madelyn, Samuel, Cole, Abenezer, Elijah, Rylee and Eleanor; and a sister, Lois Cobb, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Pamela Smith; and a brother, James Smith.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, with Rod Mayer officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Center Cemetery, Atwood, with military rites by members of Indiana ARNG Honor Guard.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the funeral home.
