Third-graders' video to be shown on MSNBC during Olympics

SOUTH WHITLEY - Some South Whitley Elementary students watching the Olympics Friday afternoon may see themselves on TV.

Third-graders last year entered a contest by Scholastic Magazine to make a video that would be shown on MSNBC during the Olympics. Teacher Karen Hathaway asked her third-graders if they wanted to enter, and the students ran with the idea, she said.

"It was pretty much the kids' effort," she said today.

The SWE video was one of 50 chosen to be shown during the Olympics, sometime between 2 and 4 p.m. Friday on MSNBC, she said.

"The sad thing is they will probably be on the bus while it is on," she said.

The students picked countries and sports and followed a script specified by Scholastic. Hathaway said they filmed six takes as a group and six of individual students. They submitted all the takes, she said, and don't know which one Scholastic picked to run on TV.

The students are in fourth grade now, she said, and they're excited about their video being chosen.

Hathaway said the project also gave them a chance to research various countries and sports, and do presentations to the class based on their research.

"It was just a fun thing we did," she said.
