FORT WAYNE - Thelma G. Powell, 89, passed away Dec. 22, 2008, at Grace Village Healthcare, Winona Lake.

She was born in Lafayette to James and Mary Ledman Goodman. On Sept. 7, 1946, in Lafayette, she married Charles Powell, who survives in Winona Lake.

She was a graduate of Purdue University. She was a member of Sacred Heart Rosary Sodality, South Side Catholic Seniors, Purdue Women's Club, Slo Poques Home Ec Club and was a government parachute inspector during World War II. She later worked as a buyer for Spiegel Co., Chicago, and in customer service at Boxberger's, Fort Wayne.

Survivors include three daughters: Linda Mettert, Fort Wayne; Gina (and spouse Rod) Kent, Middlebury; Elaine (and spouse Joe) Abbott, Warsaw; and Laurie (and spouse Domenic) Barone, Boise, Idaho; a son, Tim (and spouse Marlene) Powell, San Jose, Calif.; a son-in-law, Richard Sestile, Toledo, Ohio; a brother, Donald Goodman, Naples, Fla.; and a sister, Rosemary Weber, Naples. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jan Sestile, who died in February 2008; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1020 Capitol Ave., with Father Daniel Durkin officiating. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery.

Calling is one hour prior to services Tuesday and from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road, with vigil at 4:30 p.m.
