Theater students from Warsaw Community High School won several awards at state conference over the weekend.
They also won an award for being generous.
"It is a fully competitive situation. To be able to come out with any kind of ribbon is pretty impressive, so I was really happy with them," said Dana McAfee, WCHS drama department teacher.Bebhinn Priest won an excellence ribbon in Experienced Monologue. Tara Akers and Laura Long took home a ribbon in Group Musical, while Shay Dixon and Kristen Schwenger won in Experience Humorous Duo.
Superior ribbons were given to Shanda Fredericks in Novice Solo Musical, Ashley Skaggs in Experienced Solo Musical and Emily Readle and Cecilia Southworth in Novice Dramatic Duo.
Taking first at state was Ariel Howard and Nic West in Group Musical, and Erin Mills in Experienced Solo Musical. Mills also was the recipient of a $1,000 theater scholarship.
The state conference also does a service project each year where they put together toy boxes for children at the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, according to McAfee. WCHS received first place for the most boxes and the award for the best boxes.
"It shows to me the kids have a real compassion for other kids. I'm very proud of the award," said McAfee.
