The Good, Bad & Ugly From The Last Week In Sports

Posted
To think that I thought this was a downtime in the world of sports.
Last week can be defined in one word, crazy. From leaked medical documents to an incredible round of golf for a youngster that appears to be on his way to taking over the sport. With so much going on throughout the week, let me try to help you sort it all about by giving you the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The Good:
Just one week away from the third major of the year, and Jordan Spieth looks primed and ready to head to St. Andrews and vie for a British Open championship.
After carding a final score of 20-under par, Spieth was forced into a playoff Sunday in the John Deere Classic, which he eventually won. While his final round was strong, it was his third round that had my jaw on the floor. A chip in for eagle on No. 17 after lying up out of the trees was the best shot I’ve seen this year. Spieth has come a long way in a very short period of time in terms of his maturity. This weekend will be a big test as he looks to win his third consecutive major.
The UFC put together one of its best shows in recent memory on Saturday night during UFC 189. Ruthless Robbie Lawler defended his title against an up-and-coming young fighter from Canada, Rory McDonald. Lawler has local ties as he is cornered by chiropractor Dr. Wayne Hogenson. A relationship that started during Lawler’s youth has blossomed into a friendship that saw Hogenson on stage with Lawler during the weigh-ins on Friday night. At one time, Lawler’s shot at UFC gold looked bleak, but the Bettendorf, Iowa native has put together a string of impressive outings.
The Bad:
The NBA free agency period officially opened with the type of drama usually reserved for your mid-afternoon soaps.
One of the most coveted free agents, DeAndre Jordan, had verbally agreed to join the Dallas Mavericks as soon as the signing period was to begin. Well, Steve Balmer and the L.A. Clippers had different plans. A group of players and Balmer made a trip to Jordan’s home in Houston to ensure that they got the first crack at Jordan. At midnight, the contract was signed and he stayed with the Clippers.
While he had the right to change his mind, the fact that he refused to call Mark Cuban to let him know of his intentions was extremely juvenile. To make matters worse, he publicly apologized on Twitter of all places with a canned response to the negativity. It should make for some interesting television when these two teams meet this season.
The Ugly:
NFL star Jason Pierre-Paul had himself what could be a very costly Fourth of July. Paul injured his hand while lighting fireworks at his home in Miami.
Pierre-Paul was retained by the N.Y. Giants this offseason with the owners using the franchise tag to keep a hold of Pro Bowler. However, there’s a slight problem. JPP never signed to agree to the terms of the tag.
He refused to let the Giants into his hospital room, or know anything about the injury that he had suffered. That’s his right. Well, while he was in surgery getting a finger removed, news broke about the situation that sent the NFL world into a frenzy. The leaking of his medical documents might not just cost him money, but it could cost him any leverage he may have had with the Giants in terms of working on a long-term deal. A bad situation all around for one of the leagues best defensive linemen.
