There is a situation at Washington Elementary School that I am very concerned about.
We are now almost six weeks into the new school year and there are several sixth-grade students who do not have their textbooks their parents paid for and the students need. How can the children learn when they are not able to prepare and study the textbooks?
We can afford to have buses and drivers pick up elementary students from all of the surrounding areas, including Silver Lake and Claypool for the homecoming game, but we cannot afford to get all of our students their textbooks? I believe that there is something wrong with this, and I believe we need answers. In my opinion there is absolutely NO reason for any student to be without a textbook at the beginning of school, let alone six weeks into the first semester.
I contacted both the principal and superintendent about this on Sept. 14 in an e-mail. I was told by Dr. Haworth by e-mail on the 16th that he was unaware of the situation, but would take care of it immediately. I was told by Mr. Ray on the 17th by e-mail that he had already referred it to Dr. Haworth and he would take care of it immediately. Apparently, the situation was not taken care of immediately because there are still children without textbooks. I believe there is some missed communication going on between buildings in our school corporation. Again, I stress there is absolutely NO reason for children to be without textbooks this far into the school year, it is inexcusable and unacceptable!
