Terrific Trio Leads Wawasee Over Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER – Danielle Gunkel and Alissa Flores combined for seven hits Friday evening, while Amber Lemberg tossed a complete-game two-hitter, leading Wawasee’s varsity softball team to an 8-1 win at Manchester.
Gunkel was 4 for 5 at the plate with a double and two RBIs for the Lady Warriors. She also scored twice.
Flores was 3 for 5 with a triple, an RBI and two runs.
Meghan Fretz and Madie Wilson had one hit each in the win.
For the host Lady Squires, Cierra Carter and Ellie Milam hit one single each.
Wawasee scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, two in the fourth and tallied one more in the fifth, sixth and seventh frames.
Manchester scored its only run in the sixth inning.
Along with holding the Lady Squires to just two hits, Lemberg struck out nine and issued just two walks.
Brooklyn Howard was charged with the pitching loss for Manchester after giving up five hits and six runs in four innings. Only two of the runs were earned, as the Lady Squires committed six errors. Howard struck out six Wawasee batters.
Mattie McKee pitched the final three innings for the Lady Squires, giving up four hits, two runs and two walks while striking out two.
Wawasee, 4-2 on the season, hosts Triton today at 11 a.m.
