Teens Fix Up House

Armed with lawn tools, paint, a portable CD player and lots of refreshments, about a dozen youth from the church spent the past two days in the blistering sun working on the home at 1043 Park Ave.

With temperatures in the 90s, the youths scraped off the paint Tuesday and completed much of the painting Wednesday. Trim work will be completed today. The group also did some lawnwork and painted a shed.

Earlier this year, the group traveled to Chicago and worked on a church building. Last year, they helped repair another house in Warsaw.

The Park Avenue home, owned by an elderly woman, was chosen by the building department and Warsaw Housing Authority. Mayor Jeff Plank supplied pizza, and Ream Steckbeck provided paint free of charge.

The project was overseen by John Oelze, the church's director of youth and family ministries.

"We're trying to encourage the kids to realize there are many different ways to show God's love," he said.
