Teens Face Charges In Tire Slashings

Posted

Warsaw police are seeking charges against five male juveniles allegedly responsible for the string of tire slashings in Kosciusko County from late July to early August.

The boys, two age 15, two 14 and a 17-year-old, admitted responsibility for 43 tire slashings. They told police they are not responsible for the window-shattering incidents that took place around the same time.

According to Warsaw Police Detective Perry Hunter, the operation method between the two incidents is entirely different, leading him to believe the boys.

Hunter also said the boys, when confronted, openly discussed the tire slashings and said the incidents occurred without motive after they sneaked out of their homes in the early morning hours.

The boys were caught Aug. 1 when a Warsaw resident noticed a strange car in the neighborhood at 4:50 a.m. After tires were reported slashed in that area, police did a check of the car's license plate, which returned to the 17-year-old male, who had no known business in that area.

Upon calling the boy, he admitted to the crimes and helped police contact the four others involved, whose parents took them to the police station. There, they waived their Miranda rights and talked with police.

Charges sought against the boys are criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor. Hunter said he hopes the boys will be charged with multiple counts, depending on how many slashings each person committed.

Warsaw police declined to release the names of the juveniles.
