Taxes & War

Posted
Editor, Times-Union:

People are really upset about property taxes. As they should be. If the system were honest, when people become senior citizens their home should cease being taxed, at least up to a level that would protect a modest home. Otherwise, the power to tax is the power to destroy. And by the time the medical and insurance industry gets through with them, most seniors die completely broke.

I hate to keep throwing water on you, but the Indiana's share of the war debt so far is $6,981,000,000. To give you a little breakdown, South Bend's share so far is $96,585,000; Fort Wayne, $427,523,000. The national cost is approaching $500 billion.

In Indiana, for that money, you could have hired 121,000 teachers for one year. You could have built 63,000 housing units, or paid for 338,453 four-year college educations.

Senator Lugar and Rep. Souder were very much in the war hawk camp. Too bad they invaded the wrong country. Tune into C-SPAN now and then and watch these senators and congressman. It's not very pleasant, I assure you. In fact, after an hour you're ready to heave your last Big Mac.

Today, I watched Rep. Souder going on about congratulating sports teams while Rome is burning, so to speak. No fierce debate about the war or taxes back home. I guess I missed the days when Souder had something really important to say.

But now I hear the Democrats are beginning to out flank the Republicans as war lovers. What the hell was that election all about?

Oh, don't worry about the tax problems or war problems, we can always borrow more billions from Red China. It's nearly 3 trillion now, isn't it? Oh, yes, Iraq just bought a $100 million worth of weapons from Red China. They said the U.S. is to slow on delivery.
