Editor, Times-Union: Benjamin Franklin once said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Today we see how prophetic Dr. Franklin was. Politicians on both sides of the aisle like to talk about taxes. Some want to cut taxes, others want to raise taxes. However, when government receives money, they like to spend it. Curt Nisly, Republican nominee for State House District 22, knows every dollar the government spends must first be taken from taxpayers. We need someone in Indianapolis who will defend taxpayers and stop wasteful government spending. The Democrat lawyer running for this seat has a very different view on taxes. In an Oct. 3, 2011, letter to the Times-Union, this Democrat lawyer stated the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts were for the "hyper rich." The reality is, those Bush-era tax cuts reduced taxes for everyone paying income taxes in the United States, so that is a strange stance for someone calling himself a fiscal conservative. The Democrat lawyer also opposed the governor's recent plan to repeal the equipment property tax. Doesn't he understand this can be useful to attract new businesses and jobs? My guess is that in reality, there is not a tax the Democrat lawyer does not like, nor a tax he wouldn’t like to increase. We need a representative in Indianapolis who will stand up for the taxpayers and tell the government that we need to monitor spending carefully. We can spend our income more efficiently than the government can spend our tax dollars. We do not need another tax and spend liberal in Indianapolis. If you want someone who will prevent excess taxes, and work at making sure you keep more of your money, on Nov. 4, vote for Curt Nisly in House District 22. Rhonda Miller Nappanee
