Tanker Crash Shuts US 30A three-mile stretch of westbound US 30 remained closed late this morning after an early morning accident involving a semi-tanker and a pickup.
Westbound US 30 was closed from CR 350W to CR 650W after the accident and was expected to re-open sometime later today.
According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, a pickup truck was southbound on CR 500W and failed to stop at the intersection with US 30, colliding with the side of a westbound semi-tanker carrying anhydrous ammonia. The impact caused the tanker to jack-knife and then turn over onto its side.
Crews worked overnight and into this morning transferring the anhydrous ammonia to another tanker so the truck could be picked up and cleared from the scene.
Both the driver of the semi and the pickup were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for treatment. The driver of the semi was treated and released, and the driver of the pickup was listed in serious condition with a possible broken neck.
Police say the driver of the pickup possibly was impaired or intoxicated at the time of the crash. Blood toxicology is pending.
The drivers' names and information were not available at press time.
