Talented Trio Leads Tigers To Win

Posted
For the Boston Celtics, there's Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.

The Miami Heat have LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

Warsaw Community High School's version of the big three is Nic Moore, Lucas Grose and Jordyn Coon. And Saturday night they combined to score 40 of the Tigers 49 points, leading Class 4A's third-ranked team to a 49-31 win over the visiting Columbia City Eagles."I feel better about things tonight," said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle, whose team was sloppy at times while beating Tippecanoe Valley 69-57 in Wednesday's season opener.

"I thought everybody played better tonight," he continued. "I liked our demeanor tonight, and we were more focused. Our defense was solid, we just didn't shoot the ball well."

Moore led Warsaw with a game-high 21 points, while Grose added 10 points and 13 rebounds and Coon chipped in with nine points.

Jalen Roscoe, Travis Thomas, Joey Sparkman and Jared Bloom all scored two points for the Tigers, while Brock Anson hit 1 of 2 free throws.

With the 18-point win, Warsaw improved to 2-0, while Columbia City fell to 1-1.

Much like Wednesday's win over Tippecanoe Valley, a game in which the Tigers led 24-9 after one quarter of play, Warsaw jumped on the Eagles early Saturday night.

The Tigers led Columbia City 13-4 after eight minutes of action and went on to lead 22-13 at halftime and 38-19 at the end of the third quarter.

"It's good that we've been able to get off to fast starts," said Ogle. "It helps being at home, and Columbia City is pretty young."

Tyler Moser led the Eagles with seven points, while Daniel Woll scored five points and Drew Benedict, Matt Rethlake and Ben Murphy scored four points each.

Warsaw finished the game 20 of 47 (43 percent) from the field overall, 3 of 12 from three-point range and 6 of 14 at the free throw line.

"If we can win games without shooting well, that's a good sign," said Ogle. "There's going to be games we don't shoot well, and it was good to see we were still able to win."

The Eagles were 11 of 15 from the free throw line but were just 10 of 34 (29 percent) from the field, including an 0-of-12 effort from three-point range.

Led by Grose's 13 boards, Warsaw outrebounded Columbia City 40-18.

Roscoe pulled down six rebounds for the Tigers.

Warsaw is in action again Friday when it hosts Fort Wayne South Side and Purdue recruit Raphael Davis.

"It'll be their first game, and they have a new coach," Ogle said of the South Side Archers. "It should be a tough test. They're a long, athletic team. We haven't played anyone like them yet."
