T. Valley Talks COVID-19

AKRON – Coronavirus (COVID-19) was a topic of discussion at Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. board meeting Thursday.

“The governor came out with some guidance here,” Superintendent Blaine Conley said, noting Gov. Eric Holcomb asked nonessential gatherings be limited to no more than 250 people.

Conley noted in the governor’s guidance, school corporations will be given a 20-day waiver of the required 180 instructional days to be used as needed for the rest of the year. The 20 days do not have to be used constitutively and can be used as needed.

Conley said the school corporation is going to follow the advice the governor has given.

There are no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the school corporation, Conley said, also saying the school corporation is going “to be on top of the situation.”

“What is the best interest of our students is how we’ll make decisions,” Conley said.

There will be no school today due to parent-teacher conferences.

The school board will be asked to approve an overnight field trip for the TV Angler’s Club at the board’s Monday meeting.

“I’m going to ask you approve these, but we’ll go day by day with everything going on,” Conley said, refering to the coronavirus.

The school board also will be asked to approve three grants.

The largest grant is the Indiana Department of Education’s Digital Learning - Community Advisory Grant. Conley said it is a very important grant for the school district and details will be spoken about during Monday’s meeting.

In August, there will be a summit where community and business people will be invited, Conley said. He said he is still working on building the list of people who will be invited to it. During the summit, STEM education will be discussed, and people will be given information about the STEM education program the school corporation is trying to put on.

Conley said he will ask the board to approve some extracurricular assignments.
