I would like to comment on the letter from Mrs. Funderburk titled "The System."
I am currently incarcerated at the Miami Correctional Facility. I was sentenced to four years on a plea bargain for possession of meth.
Currently, I am in the CLIFF program and will graduate the program within the next few weeks. Like Mrs. Funderburk, I, too, believe that Kosciusko County is caught in an addiction epidemic. I, too, believe in treatment before incarceration. However, I also realize that until you are ready to quit no amount of treatment will ever cure you. Still, perhaps the enforcement of treatment, daily re-education will prove better than incarceration.
It is apparent that incarceration is not working as a deterrent because the prisons of Indiana are full and overflowing.
In fact, "The System" as Mrs. Funderburk calls it, is overcrowded, stalled, destroying and archaic.
It is time for a change. Perhaps enforcement of treatment and other sentencing alternatives will be for the better.
Until we try it we won't know. Remember: If you do what you have always done, you will always get what you have always gotten ... make a change.
