SYRACUSE – An anonymous donation of $20,000 puts Syracuse within reach of funding for a youth sports complex.
Chad Jonsson, parks and rec superintendent, told the town council Tuesday that he learned last week to expect the donation. He didn’t know how large it would be until it came in Monday.
A total of $65,000 has been gathered for the project – the transformation of Vega Field into a football field and baseball diamond – with another $11,000 promised for next year.
The town needs a total of $80,000 by March to receive a matching grant from the K21 Foundation.
Syracuse Parks is partnering with Wawasee Kiwanis and Youth Football clubs to develop the complex. A groundbreaking was held in October, and work is expected to resume in spring, Jonsson said.
Also during the meeting, the council voted to establish a Tax Increment Financing district in Oakwood to help improve the newly annexed area. The TIF was previously recommended by the Syracuse Redevelopment Commission and Plan Commission.
The council also made appointments to town departments and committees for next year, and named member Larry Siegel the new council president. Bill Musser made the nomination for the position that council has traditionally rotated every year. Siegel appointed Musser as vice president.
