SYRACUSE - After the Sept. 11 tragedy, patriotism gained new steam in the United States.
To keep the spirit alive at Syracuse Elementary School, the first Tuesday of each month was set aside to celebrate America's freedoms.
Thursday (because it rained Tuesday), all of the Syracuse students formed a large red, white and blue heart outside of the school. The heart symbolizes the students' and teachers' love for the country.
Each student will receive a post card photo as a memento of the special year.
Past patriotism events included: In October, ribbons titled "Take A Stand For A Drug-Free Land" were given to each student. In November, students shared what they were grateful for in their lives. In December and March, students sang "God Bless the USA." In February, the school took part in an "I am an American" march.
Students were encouraged to wear red, white and blue on the special days. The goal is to remember those who have sacrificed their lives to make America great and to make choices each day that will show respect to each other, the country and themselves.
Syracuse Elementary is a kindergarten through fifth-grade school with 585 students.
