SYRACUSE - The focal point of the Lakeside Park Community Center is an ornamental lighthouse that is visible from across Syracuse Lake.
This addition is possible through the generosity of Janet Hays and several memorial contributions that were given in Donald Hays' honor. Janet and Donald Hays were owners of The Beacon restaurant from 1976 to 1990, and long enjoyed the majestic beauty of lighthouses.
Janet Hayes said, "When I discovered that the lighthouse may be removed from the plans, I decided to help."
She added, "This (community center) will be a valuable asset to the community, especially for those that stay here year-round."
Many area residents eagerly anticipate the center's completion since construction began in August. The facility is scheduled to open in June.
Michael Hixenbaugh, Syracuse Parks superintendent, said he is excited for the opening of the center and appreciates the support the community has given this historic community project.
