SYRACUSE -ÊCounty ordinances prevent flashing or illuminated signs.
Thursday, at the Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals, Penguin Point's petition for an exception to replace a non-conforming sign in a commercial district was approved. However, they were given 60 days by the board to fix the sign so the lights will not flash.
The board also put a condition on the approval that if the sign is ever replaced it must be moved so that it meets setback requirements. The previous sign at the location stood in the road right of way of Baltimore Street. Penguin Point's contractor put the sign up, not knowing the old sign was on the road right of way, and before they actually received a permit.
The sign is on the east side of Ind. 13 and south of Baltimore Street in Syracuse.
Other petitions approved include:
A petition by Judy Morgan for a variance to build a house 25 feet from the Medusa Street right of way. The property is on the south side of Medusa Street and zero feet north of B&O Railroad property in Syracuse.
Larry Coplen's petition for a variance to build a house 6 feet from a rear property line. The property is on the south side of Northshore Drive and 340 feet east of W.E. Long Street in Syracuse.
Richard Graig's petition for an exception to allow a residential accessory building on property that has a residence on it in a commercial district. The property is on the south side of Main Street and 66 feet west of Harrison Street in Syracuse.
Board members include chairman Michael Brower, vice chairman Stan Insley, Barbara Carwile, Jon Brookmyer and Steve Sharp.
