A Syracuse man is one of two people arrested in connection with an attempted murder investigation by the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.
Tyrone A. Hunt, 35, of 309 W. Hillside Drive, Syracuse, was taken into custody from his vehicle Wednesday evening on Ind. 13, just south of the Elkhart/Kosciusko county line.
The other suspect, Arthur F. Bills, 19, of Ligonier, was arrested in his father's Ligonier home.
Both arrests were made without incident. Elkhart County Sheriff's Department officers were assisted by Syracuse Police Department and Kosciusko and Noble county sheriff's departments. Hunt was also booked for an outstanding robbery warrant.
According to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, the arrests in the attempted murder case stem from a Jan. 7 shooting incident involving another Syracuse man at the Jackson Cemetery, near Benton.
Mark A. Montgomery, 37, of 203 S. Front St., Syracuse, suffered two gunshot wounds - one to his head and one to his buttocks - and was treated at Goshen General Hospital and released following the incident.
Police said a resident of Elkhart CR 44 reported giving Montgomery a ride to Syracuse after he came to their house and said he had been shot and needed a ride. They called police after returning home. The victim was located in Syracuse after police went door to door in the area where he was dropped off, police said.
Montgomery reportedly told police he was shot after being with two "associates" - one of whom owed him money - in the cemetery. One of the men allegedly brandished a gun and Montgomery said he was shot as he fled from them.
