SYRACUSE - In a game where mistakes controlled the outcome, Wawasee's football team made more.

The Minutemen scored early, putting 14 points on the board after seven plays from scrimmage.

"We had a lot of fundamental mistakes that Concord capitalized on," Wawasee coach Joe Rietveld said.

The Warriors' mistakes were not primarily turnovers. Brent Doty, subbing in for injured quarterback Adam Brown, threw three interceptions, the three lone turnovers for Wawasee.

"Doty did a great job as a starter for us tonight. He filled the spot well and made great touchdown passes for us," Rietveld said.

Doty threw for 141 yards and two touchdown passes. One of the passes was 67 yards to wide receiver Paul Gilliam. The other was to Peter Chang for an 18-yard score.

Wawasee's defense shut down the offensive attack of Concord better than any team this season.

They allowed Ricky McKenzie 166 yards rushing on the night. McKenzie had been averaging 189 total offensive yards before last night's game. They also shut down the rushing yards of Concord senior fullback Josh Staley.

McKenzie added to his touchdown total by racking up four more to make his total 17 on the season. As of last week, he led the state in scoring.

Jimmy Meyer, Wawasee's second-leading rusher, was held to 12 yards on six carries. Logan Lees also had trouble as he rushed the ball only 15 times for 84 yards.

"You can't play the No. 2 team in the state and fall behind early if you expect to come out with a win," Rietveld said.

Wawasee (2-2,1-1 NLC), travels to a tough conference matchup against NorthWood (3-1, 1-1 NLC).
