Syracuse Hosts Firefighters Fest; Other Events Scheduled This Fall

SYRACUSE - For the second year, Syracuse is hosting a firefighters festival.

It's just one of many events planned for Syracuse during the next few weeks.

Events for the Second Annual Firefighters Festival are through Sunday and include a carnival, fire truck muster, parade, waterball contest and a coin hunt for children.

The five days of activities kicked off at 3 p.m. Wednesday with the opening of the carnival.

Today at 7 p.m. is the auto extrication demonstration.

Saturday, the carnival is open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Waterball registration is from 7 to 8 a.m., with the waterball brackets formed from 8 to 8:30 a.m. The tournament is 8:30 to 9 a.m. Truck muster registration then begins from 9 to 10 a.m., with judging from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and awards at 4 p.m.

Parade registration also is Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Parade lineup is at 4:30 p.m. and the parade begins at 5 p.m.

Children ages 1-5 years old have their coin hunt at 11 a.m. Saturday, with children 6-10 hunting at 2 p.m.

Sunday, the carnival is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Other events also are scheduled for the remainder of August and in September in Syracuse.

Today, the 2004 4A Indiana runner-up Wawasee football team has a home game against DeKalb at Warrior Field at 7 p.m. and a home game Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. against Concord.

Saturday, the Wawasee High School Choir will sell Nelson's Port-A-Pit BBQ starting at 10 a.m. at the Lakeland Youth Center, as well as a car wash.

Junior Achievement and Rotary are having a bike, run or walk event at the Syracuse Community Center. Registration starts at 7 a.m. and cost is $10 per person. There will be door prizes and the first 100 participants get a shirt. For more information about the bike, run or walk event, call Brenda Peterson at 574-658-9471.

On Sept. 3, the Wawasee High School marching band will sell Nelson's Port-A-Pit BBQ for $5, starting at 10 a.m. at the Lakeland Youth Center. They also will have a car wash and bake sale.

The Syracuse Lions Club will hold its semi-annual White Cane Day fundraiser from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lance's New Market and Arthur's Fresh Market. Proceeds will assist in providing vision services in the community.

Sept. 7, the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce board meeting will be at the community center starting at 12:30 p.m. Anyone interested in attending should contact Kristi Plikerd at 574-457-5637. All members are welcome to attend.

The Third Annual Old Oaken Bucket Golf Match pits the Indiana University Chapter of Kosciusko County against the Purdue Club Sept. 11. Join in on the four-person golf scramble at South Shore Golf Course, Syracuse. Check-in is at 12:30 p.m. and tee-off for everyone is at 1 p.m. Cost is $40 per person and includes green fees and cart.
