SYRACUSE -ÊSyracuse is the first city or town in Kosciusko County to earn the national recognition of being named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Saturday, the town will celebrate that recognition and Arbor Day at Crosson Mill Park from 10 a.m. to noon.
"Tree City USA recognition from the National Arbor Day Foundation is a symbol of how important our community trees are to us," said Brian Redshaw, Syracuse town manager.
Bernell Fischer, Indiana State forester, will present the Tree City USA flag and other recognition materials to Syracuse officials. This award presentation will be part of Syracuse's annual Arbor Day Celebration, which will include children's games and activities, a tree planting demonstration and free tree seedlings.
"More than ever, today we understand the importance of trees to our cities and towns," said John Rosenow, president of the National Arbor Day Foundation. "Trees help clean our air and water, moderate heat and cold, and bring warmth and grace to our homes.
"Tree City USA recognizes communities that have proven their commitment to an effective, ongoing community forestry program.
"Such a program is one marked by renewal and improvement."
Michael Hixenbaugh, Syracuse Tree Board secretary and Syracuse Parks and Recreation superintendent, said, "I encourage everyone to come out and participate in the Arbor Day celebration, especially because we will receive our Tree City award."
He said as part of the opening ceremonies, the Indiana state tree - a tulip tree - will be planted. Children's activities will include "Water the Tree" and "CO2O2 Exchange" relays as well as crafts and coloring.
To become a Tree City USA, a community must have a tree care ordinance, a legal tree governing body, a comprehensive urban forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.
Tree City USA communities receive a flag with the program's logo and a walnut-mounted plaque. Winners also receive Tree City USA community signs with stickers indicating additional qualifying years.
