SYRACUSE - Information about several programs and events was announced at the short meeting of the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce Wednesday.
Among the information was the idea to commemorate Flag Day, June 14, by flying flags of each of the 50 states on the utility poles that line Ind. 13. It is hoped that 50 residents will each sponsor a state flag at $49.95 each.
Also on sale at $125 each are flags to honor Wawasee High School class of 2001, which also would be flown from the utility poles.
Both kinds of flags are available at the chamber office.
The chamber will be selling discount amusement park tickets to members. Savings vary but are about $10 per ticket. Tickets will be available for Cedar Point, Kings Island, Six Flags, Holiday World and Great America.
Town manager Brian Redshaw invited chamber members to join in cleaning up Ind. 13 through the Village. Work will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. He reminded everyone that spring cleanup will be the week of May 14 - 18. It is a time when town residents can set out unusual items for collection, but no large appliances will be accepted.
Redshaw also reported that the Park Department's Arbor Day celebration will be a big deal this year with activities at Lakeside Park, culminating in planting new trees in front of town hall.
Martha Stoelting added that as in the past, Garden Club members would commemorate Arbor Day by planting trees in Syracuse Cemetery to help hide the water tower.
Redshaw told the chamber that an ordinance limiting parking in town will be discussed and possibly voted on at Tuesday's town council meeting, which also will address funding for the community center. A vote on widening Ind. 13 has been postponed until May.
To finance the scholarship for Wawasee High School Business Club members, the chamber needs 10 businesses to donate $50 each, president Richard Brungardt told the board.
He also announced that WHS graduation will be at 7 p.m. on May 25, the prom will be May 19 and the spring concert will be April 27 and 28.
In other business, the chamber will sponsor chicken barbecues at the Lakeland Youth Center Saturday and again on June 30. May 4 is the date set for the chamber luncheon, which will be hosted by Oakwood Inn. Guests will be Rotary members, who will hear a talk on Vision 2010, a focus on the future.
It was announced that Diggin' in the Dirt landscaped the base of the sign on the south side of town near Wawasee Middle School.
