SYRACUSE -ÊSigns to promote the Syracuse-Wawasee area at the north and south ends of town were a focus of discussion Wednesday at the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce meeting.
The Chamber is looking to put a billboard at the intersection of Ind. 6 and Ind. 13 on the north end of town and a sign adjacent to the athletic field by Wawasee Middle School on the south side.
Chamber Executive Director Shelly Bickel presented three proposals from local companies that make signs.
On the Scene Printing, Syracuse, will produce a sign at cost to the Chamber, Bickel said, because the company is a member of the chamber. Two 4-foot by 8-foot signs with three colors and vinyl application will cost $500 per sign.
Premiere Signs, Goshen, and Sign Graphics, North Webster, also submitted bids.
Wawasee Property Owners Association said they will put up signs if SWCC doesn't. Kiwanis, Lions Club and the Rotary Club also want to participate.
Bill Beemer said, "I think it's going to have to be larger than 4 by 8, no matter what we do."
SWCC President Tim Yeager said, "If we're going to put up a sign, we should make it as nice and pretty as we can."
The chamber decided the sign should be a minimum size of 8 feet high by 16 feet wide. Bickel will look into pricing for larger signs.
In other news, Bill Beemer said the Syracuse Park Department received a $275,000 Hometown Community Grant for the Syracuse Community Center.
"I think we can thank Rep. Bob Meeks and Rep. Dave Wolkins because they introduced it in the house," Beemer said.
He also said the plans for the community center will be downsized because the senior center is not going to be part of it. Lakeland Youth Center, however, is interested in becoming part of the center now, but details still need to be ironed out, he said.
Finally, Dr. Richard Brungardt was unanimously voted in as vice president to the SWCC.
