Syracuse celebrated Arbor Day Saturday and received a special honor at the same time. State Forester Burnell Fischer was on hand to present the town with its 'Tree City USA' designation. The town earned the desigation by celebrating Arbor Day, adopting a tree ordinance, earmarking $2 per citizen per year for tree-enhancement projects and appointing a tree board. Fischer said Syracuse was the 45th out of a possible 550 towns in Indiana to earn the designation. As part of the celebration, town council president Barb Carwile read an Arbor Day proclamation which, in part, urged 'all citizens to plant and care for trees to gladden the heart and promote the well-being of this and future generations.'
