Syracuse BMV Hearing Moved To WHS Auditorium

SYRACUSE - Wawasee High School auditorium has been named the site of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles meeting set for Friday.

Earlier this week, BMV commissioner Joel Silverman announced a public hearing regarding the northernmost Kosciusko County office, indicating it would be held at the facility's Huntington Street address.

Because of public concern the event has been moved to 1 Warrior Path. The Syracuse Chamber of Commerce hopes to fill all 700 seats for the 7 p.m. meeting.

"We have what I feel are good statistics," said Martha Stoelting, Chamber president. "I think we're actually second in the number of boat transactions. People buy boats from the local marinas and can register ownership immediately. And now that we can't get our driver's license over the Internet, those number are going to go up."

Stoelting said may people from Ligonier and Cromwell use the Syracuse branch. Not everyone wants to do business over the Internet or telephone or through the mail.

The possibility of closing the Syracuse branch is supposed to be under review. However, building owners Jim and Karen Tranter received notice from the state BMV indicating the rental agreement would end Aug. 31, Stoelting said.
