SYRACUSE - A new contract with Waste Management of Warsaw for garbage removal was approved by city council.
Instead of using specific colored garbage bags, though, residents will use their own bags, but will be required to use colored tags with the town name on the bags.
Residents will be required to use 30-gallon bags and will be given enough tags to average three bags a week for an entire year.
The contract begins Aug. 1 and residents can pick up their tags at the clerk's office. The service is paid through property taxes.
Landlords are recommended to pick up tags for their tenants, said town manager Matt Vigneault.
The city's cost for the service is $70,792, which is about $5.46 a month per residence. The number of residences in the program increased by 20 in the past year to 1,080.
One other change was included. Residents needing extra stickers can purchase 10 stickers for $5.
In other matters, parks superintendent Susan Neff said progress on plans for a community center is continuing. The next meeting date has not been set, but could include architects interested in making proposals.
A committee has met several times trying to define the parameters and needs of the community building, which will likely be constructed on donated land adjacent to Lakeside Park.
Council will submit a contract proposal to Triax Cable after being drafted by an Indianapolis law firm. Council chose to submit a different draft after finding the original proposal by Triax unacceptable.
Vigneault recommended the letter suggest channels 3 or 4 be reserved for public access because two companies have expressed interest in providing such a service. After much debate in which council worried about what channel, if any, would be eliminated, they suggested channels 5 and 6 be reserved.
Also, a request for a vacation of a public right-of-way was denied. Gordon and Marie Moore sought the vacation near their home in Potawatomi Park. Council turned down the request because it would have limited the road right-of-way too much.
