SYRACUSE – During its monthly meeting Tuesday night, Syracuse Town Council approved an additional appropriation to pay for repair needed to the town’s wastewater treatment facility.
The appropriation, for $392,122, will come from Economic Development Income Tax funds and go toward replacing worn and outdated equipment. The total cost of the project is expected to be in the $983,000 range.
The council also approved a contract with Bill’s Heating of Goshen for $15,720 to replace heating and air conditioning systems in the public works building.
Public Works Superintendent Robin Merchant also told the council flows from recent rainy days has increased the flow into the wastewater plant, and that most of that flow has come from the Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District.
Town Manager Henry DeJulia said there is a study being conducted on the town’s dams to determine how much it will cost to repair them. Years of wear and tear have prompted the study.
Parks and Recreation Superintendent Chad Jonsson said Long Street in front of the community center will be closed late Saturday morning for the Easter egg hunt in Lakeview Park. People who want to use the parking lot at the community center for the hunt should approach from the south via East Main Street. Long Drive will reopen shortly after the end of the egg hunt.
Jonsson also said a tree planting day will be April 21 at Lauderman Park, and that construction of new restrooms at Lakeside Park has begun.
Fire Chief Mickey Scott commented on the siren tests Tuesday as part of a statewide drill for Severe Weather Awareness Week.
The next Syracuse Town Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. April 17 at the town hall, 310 N. Huntington St.
