WINONA LAKE – The Symphony of the Lakes is presenting two soloists in a free concert tonight in Winona Lake. Hugh Sung is recognized as one of America’s finest pianists, according to conductor Patrick Kavanaugh, and he will perform the “Grieg Piano Concerto”. He gave his debut at 11, performing a concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has performed all over the world. When he’s not traveling, Hugh Sung is a full-time collaborative pianist at the Curtis Institute of Music, having joined their staff in 1993. He has recorded with the Vox, Virtuosi, Avie, Biddulph and CRI labels. The Symphony’s other soloist is local violinist Rebecca Benjamin. Although she is only 17, Kavanaugh said, “She plays the violin with a passion and precision that are rarely found at any age.” Starting on her instrument when she was just 3, Benjamin has already performed solos with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Huntington University Chamber Players, the Fort Wayne Youth Orchestra and the MasterWorks Philharmonic – where she won its annual concerto competition. Tonight she performs part of a work usually reserved for older virtuosos, the “Violin Concerto” by Tchaikovsky. The performance takes place in Winona Lakes Rodeheaver Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., and in free and open to the public. For more information, go to www.SymphonyoftheLakes.org
