WINONA LAKE – Symphony of the Lakes kicks off its 2016-17 season, themed “Colors of the Symphony,” with its opening concert “Music That Moves You” at 2 p.m. Oct. 9 in Winona Heritage Room. The concert will open with the "Academic Festival Overture" by Johannes Brahms, “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, “Symphony No. 5 The Reformation” by Felix Mendelssohn, “Symphony No. 7” by Ludwig Van Beethoven, and a special salute to Cole Porter in honor of Indiana's bicentennial year, according to a news release from the symphony. Born in 1891 in Peru, Ind., Porter gained fame as a major songwriter on Broadway in the ’20s and ’30s, eventually achieving his greatest success with 1948’s “Kiss Me, Kate.” In honor of Indiana’s bicentennial, as well as one of the state’s great contributors to music and theater, the Symphony of the Lakes will perform music from “Anything Goes” and Kiss Me, Kate.” The organization also announced the winners of its most recent auditions to become members of the Symphony of the Lakes: Shana Brath, first violin, Warsaw; Mariah Woolley, second violin, Syracuse; Sean Diller, viola, Elkhart; Rod Sroufe, double bass, Van Wert, Ohio; Diane Martin-Ratliff, flute and piccolo, Warsaw; Josh Ganger, principal trumpet, Bristol; Barry Frisinger, second trumpet, Rochester; Micah Detweiler, percussion, Goshen; Ben Meulink, percussion, Warsaw; and David Husby, bassoon, Minnesota. Next in the season is the holiday concert, “A Christmas Cabaret,” featuring Chicago-based cabaret artists Beckie Menzie and Tom Michael. It starts at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 in Winona Heritage Room.
