Staff Report-
Symphony of the Lakes Orchestra named Rebecca Kubacki as president for the 2008-09 concert season.
"As president," Kubacki said, "my goal is to dispel the notion that symphonies are boring and for adults only. Our first concert, 'Costume Night,' is geared toward families and children. We encourage kids to come in their favorite costume, though not necessary, and enjoy an evening of Indiana Jones and Star Wars music to name just a few of the pieces Dr. Patrick Kavanaugh will be conducting.
"At our concerts last year, it would not be unusual to see children sitting on the floor in the back of the room coloring while parents enjoyed the concerts. We make every effort to make our concerts a family friendly event."
The Symphony of the Lakes Orchestra's concert schedule is: Oct. 10, "Costume Night"; Nov. 16, "Bravo Beethoven"; Dec. 12, "Handel's Messiah Sing-Along"; Feb. 14, "A Night of Romance"; and April 24, "Night at the Opera."
All concerts are at 7:30 p.m. at Rodeheaver Auditorium. They are free and open to the public.
Kubacki said, "What sets our community apart from others are the cultural, educational and physical activities we have to offer. Providing amenities, such as the Symphony of the Lakes Orchestra, not only improves the quality of life, it makes our community appealing for families who want to move here.
"My pet peeve is when someone says I want to live in a bigger city because it has so much to offer," she continued. "I am proud to note we have great schools, colleges, beautiful lakes, Biblical and Nash gardens, the Greenway, top-rated restaurants and a quality symphony that is free to the community. The only area where we are lagging behind from bigger cities is crime."We invite the entire community to enjoy some quality time with their family and listen to the beautiful music of the Symphony of the Lakes Orchestra," she concluded.
